Typeface guidelines for clear, uniform, and identifiable use

Brand Fonts

The IAFF brand uses three primary fonts: ATF Railroad Gothic for main headlines, Crimson for sub-headlines, and Rustica for body copy and subheaders. The official brand fonts are accessible via Adobe Fonts (ATF Railroad Gothic; Rustica) and Google Fonts (Crimson Pro).

When the primary fonts are not available, a fallback system font may be used instead. The fonts noted on the right are web-safe and can adapt to any browser on any device. This ensures that the intended font will always be displayed properly on a webpage, even if the font isn't installed on the user's computer.

Typography in Practice

A consistent type hierarchy is important to guiding a reader's eye across the page, screen, or other medium, ensuring information is easy to digest at a glance and establishing importance.

The example here displays the main header in Railroad Gothic ATF (2) between the subheader in Crimson (1) and body copy in Rustica (3).

In addition to establishing a type hierarchy, ensuring there is enough contrast between text and its background is crucial for readability. See the examples below for our best text-on-color combinations.
